There is a strong chance that mediators will find themselves mediating with someone who is considered an HCP (high conflict personality). When engaging with a HCP, a mediator will notice four main characteristics that are unique to these people. That makes it challenging when attempting to use the interest-based approach learned in basic mediation training. This training will cover these main characteristics and provide participants with practical tools to better control the process and manage the HCPs in high conflict cases.
Learning Objectives:
• Recognize the signs that you might be dealing with a high conflict personality
• Understand the High Conflict Brain and the specific behaviors they exhibit
• Learn about the four “What Not To Do” when working with HCPs
• Recognize the resistance of a HCP and learn how to manage it
• Consider when to use coaching, meeting jointly, or shuttle mediation
• Use case studies to practice the new tools
• Learn How to recover from difficult endings
